20 Cheeky Questions: Michelle Crawford of Hugo & Elsa

Michelle Crawford is a devoted cook and eater. She lives in the Tasmanian countryside with her husband and two children and blogs at Hugo & Elsa about life, food, gardening, and eating. She’s written a book called A Table in the Orchard and does styling, food writing and workshops. She likes wearing tartan and drinking tea and we’re very happy she agreed to answer our 20 Cheeky Questions!

If you were a plant, what would you be?
I’d be a giant Bramley Apple Tree – they’re such a big lovely tree and provide kilos of the best cooking apples every year.

What cheers you up?
The outdoors, even when in the bleakest of moods, a healthy dose of being outside fixes me up in no time.

What is the habit you are proudest of breaking or want to break?
I would love to break my chronic Facebook habit.

What is your favourite word?
Gorgeous

Have you ever been in love with two people at the same time?
Yes, I’m always in love with lots of people at the same time.

Name a skill you wish you had.
I wish I could build things with wood, carpentry skills.

What is the most played song on your playlist?
I’m a podcast addict, so I’m often listening to those rather than music. I love This American Life and The BBC Food Program is the best!

If you had to make a garden with 3 plants, what would they be?
Rhubarb, for its gorgeous thick glossy leaves, and its architectural features. Sage, for its silvery grey leaves. Rosemary because it’s so versatile.

What makes somebody sexy?
Someone who is confident and happy in themselves, intelligent with a wicked sense of humour.

What do you miss most about being a kid?
Being fearless, you know, like hurtling down a steep road at full speed in your roller-skates.

What’s the first thing you notice when you meet a person?
It depends on the person, I think most people have some really unique characteristic that’s their own that I notice first – great hair, sparkly eyes, beautiful skin, generous smile, incredible shoes!

What qualities in people do you admire the most?
Kindness, thoughtfulness, a good sense of humour.

What would you be doing in an alternate life or career?
An organic farmer on the lush south west coast of Ireland.

What’s your perfect three-course meal?
Anything cooked and shared with friends.

What is special about where you live?
The Huon River and its changing moods.

If you could control your dreams, what would you dream about?
Walking on the moon.

What’s your favourite kind of weather?
Snowy, it’s so quiet.

How many people are you completely yourself with?
Well I think I’m myself with pretty much everyone, in fact I should probably hold back a little bit sometimes and not completely be myself as it’s not always appropriate.

We’re very excited to be sharing some of Michelle’s musings on ritual and food, AND her brown sugar pavlova recipe later in the month. Stay tuned! In the meantime, check out Michelle’s website, blog and social media profiles here:
